Submission of a Full Proposal (at a later date) constitutes an Agreement to follow these Guidelines:
Artist participants will:
- Create new projects based on research of a historic synagogue site and/or related community that has been influenced by migration
- the subject community may be the current occupants of a former synagogue, or a transformed synagogue, or a new synagogue which carries the past of a migrated community
- All media will be considered, including:
- oral histories
- installations
- videos
- paintings
- photography
- interactive electronic works
- fabric and textiles
- oral histories
- In keeping with community based art practices, all work for this project should maintain respect for the cultural and religious traditions of the community groups which are the subject matter and target audiences for the exhibition, including the past and present occupants of changing neighborhoods and religious institutions.
- Artists are responsible for securing proper permissions for photographs, interviews, and any components of their work that maybe subject to copyright
- All participating artists are encouraged to contribute skills and committee participation to insure a visible and lively exhibition
What kind of Research?
Artists research differently! Research for this exhibition means exploring information and places as part of your process of developing new work. This may include:
- interviews with past or current members of an institution occupying a former synagogue
(this might very well be members of an unrelated church or community group)
- visits to "silent witness" (former) synagogues to photograph or draw
- research in historical societies for moving images and/or documents
- visits to rebuilt synagogues with memories and transferred objects of migration
Full Proposals : Reviewed Monthly / Rolling Admissions
First Review of Full Proposals in July (details TBA)
Research and Creative thought are essential to this project, therefore full proposals are due for review after you have had time to think about and envision your project. You will be asked to submit sketches or a detailed description of your proposed work
All artists who have been provisionally accepted into the group via "Expressions of Interest" will have access to a private group networking site, where artists may upload working proposals for feedback and ask questions
Full Proposals will be reviewed by the Artistic Committee to be sure that they conform to the theme of Silent Witnesses: Migration Stories through Synagogues Transformed, Rebuilt, or Left Behind, and include evidence of artistic research and thoughtful engagement with the theme
The proposal phase of this exhibition is an important step in developing a coherent group project, in which artists create new work that stirs their imaginations and is in their own visual vocabularies, while at the same time fitting within the boundaries of this themed, artist organized, group project
Proposals which do not adhere to the Guidelines cannot be included in the exhibition and project
Review of (near) Completed Work : December 1
Final Work will be reviewed by the Artistic Committee in time to produce a quality catalogue and press materials.
Works will be reviewed to assure that they conform to the original proposal, and to the project Guidelines
Catalogue and press photographs and texts are due at this time
